Police in Bayelsa State have arrested seventeen suspected cultists in connection with the brutal killing of two Niger Delta University (NDU) graduates. The suspects were intercepted Friday night along the Tombia-Amassoma road following a tip-off.
According to Vanguard, officers from the Rapid Response Squad stopped a Suzuki minibus during a routine stop-and-search operation. A police source revealed, "We found over thirteen young men crammed inside, some with blood stains on their clothes and machetes stained with blood."
Among those arrested were four alleged cyber fraudsters (popularly known as "Yahoo boys") accused of financing the attack. The suspects reportedly fled the crime scene in two minibuses but abandoned one after it broke down.
Bayelsa Police Spokesman Musa Mohammed confirmed the arrests, stating that investigations were ongoing to determine each suspect’s level of involvement.
The victims, including Ayaokpo Sinclair from Tombia, were awaiting their NYSC call-up letters when they were attacked in Gbarantoru community. The incident adds to recent cult-related violence in Yenagoa, where rival gangs have engaged in deadly clashes.
A senior police officer assured that the state Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, is working closely with security operatives and the state government to curb cult-related crimes.
