Tragedy in Awka: Masquerade Crushed to Death by Commercial Tricycle During Festival Procession

Awka masquerade procession turns tragic as tricycle crushes young boy

A tragic incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State, on Sunday when a commercial tricycle fatally struck a young boy dressed as a masquerade, crushing his head and killing him instantly.

The accident happened during pre-festival processions for the upcoming Imo Awka Festival—an annual traditional celebration held every May in honor of the town’s deity, symbolized by a monkey. Eyewitnesses reported that the victim, in full masquerade regalia, was part of a group parading the streets to raise awareness ahead of the festival’s official commencement.

According to Mr. Iyke Orji, an eyewitness, "This afternoon in Awka, Imo, masquerades were seen everywhere. One small boy in a costume was hit by a Keke NAPEP, and his head was crushed. It was indeed a sad day."

The tricycle driver involved in the accident was reportedly apprehended at the scene by local authorities. The Imo Awka Festival, despite its cultural significance, has been marred by past incidents of violence and fatalities, raising concerns over safety protocols.

This year’s festival is scheduled to begin on May 19 and end on May 24. The tragic incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter regulations during traditional processions to prevent further loss of life.
