African Democratic Congress (ADC) 2027 presidential candidate and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to strictly enforce the Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local government areas if elected.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Atiku promised that his administration would bypass state governments to pay federal allocations directly into local council bank accounts.
Highlighting the July 11, 2024 landmark apex court decision, Atiku accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of intentionally failing to enforce the judgment to appease state governors ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He emphasized that financial autonomy at the third tier of government is vital to curbing rural poverty, enhancing security, and restoring true federalism.
