A major legal and political clash has erupted between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) over the official list of candidates for the 2027 Anambra State House of Assembly election.
The NDC accused the electoral umpire of illegally replacing its validly nominated candidates with unauthorized names.
However, INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna swiftly rejected the claims on Tuesday, maintaining that candidate nominations remain the sole responsibility of political parties.
Haruna revealed that INEC holds duly signed Form EC9E documents submitted directly by the NDC National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, and National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu.
In response, the NDC cited an August 22 petition demanding that INEC recognize nine specific candidates who won internal party primary appeals in May 2026 across constituencies including Anaocha I, Njikoka, Idemili North, and Onitsha South I.
