Guilty Verdict: Ex-Gang Leader Duane Davis Convicted of First-Degree Murder in Tupac's Death

Nearly three decades after the drive-by shooting that claimed the life of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas jury has found 63-year-old Duane "Keffe D" Davis guilty of first-degree murder.

Following a two-week trial that gripped the music and true crime worlds, the panel reached a verdict on Monday, August 31, 2026.

While prosecutors acknowledged that Davis did not pull the trigger himself, they successfully argued that the former gang leader acted as the "shot-caller" who orchestrated the fatal attack on September 7, 1996.

The prosecution's case was heavily reliant on Davis's own public admissions, including recorded police interviews, YouTube appearances, and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend.

During closing arguments, Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal emphasized that the shooting was a premeditated act of retaliation following a casino brawl involving Shakur and Davis's nephew earlier that evening.

Defense attorneys, led by Michael Sanft, attempted to dismiss Davis's prior claims as mere braggadocio designed for financial gain, pointing to a lack of physical evidence tying him to the Cadillac.

However, the jury was unswayed by the defense's arguments. Following the conviction, Davis now faces the possibility of life in prison.

"Let’s be clear, Duane Davis did not pull the trigger.

But he did plan the shooting in retaliation of the beating of his nephew. Remarkably, you will learn that from Duane Davis himself." — Binu Palal, Chief Deputy District Attorney
