Popular Nigerian comedian, actor, and writer Bovi Ugboma has opened up on his deliberate strategy to decline certain Nollywood acting roles early in his career to avoid being typecast into passive or stereotypical characters.
Featuring on the CreativiTea podcast, the 46-year-old creator explained that after his breakout performance as a rustic 'Warri boy' in the 2007 hit series Extended Family, movie directors repeatedly offered him gatekeeper and passive comic roles.
Having grown up analyzing international entertainment industries, Bovi made a conscious decision in his late twenties to reject these offers.
While acknowledging that being typecast can be lucrative, he urged young creatives to build intrinsic value and remain true to their artistic vision rather than taking every role out of desperation.
