Tension escalated in Ifonyintedo, located within the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, after angry youths set fire to two police stations following the fatal shooting of a resident, Owolabi Oniyiku, at an unauthorized police checkpoint.
Local sources reported that Oniyiku, a Lagos resident who had returned home to celebrate the annual Oro festival, was accosted by police officers at a makeshift checkpoint near Akinde Junction while returning from dropping off friends.
The confrontation resulted in his death, triggering outrage in the community, particularly as his wife had given birth just two days prior.
In response, the Ipokia Local Government Youth Forum, through a statement by General Secretary Adeyemi Olusegun, called for an immediate investigation, the prosecution of culpable officers, an official apology to the family, and the complete dismantling of unauthorized checkpoints along the Ifonyintedo corridor.
While senior security personnel confirmed the occurrence of the incident, official responses from the Ogun State Police Command remain pending.
"We demand disbandment of the illegal, unauthorised checkpoint where the incident happened and other illegal checkpoints along Ifonyintedo Road." — Adeyemi Olusegun, General Secretary, Ipokia Youth Forum
