Operatives of the Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA), operating through its Women and Child Trafficking Investigation Unit, have arrested a mother and her accomplice for allegedly selling a newborn baby for ₦2.9 million in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The arrest was carried out in collaboration with the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare following community-based intelligence reports regarding an illegal adoption arrangement.
Interrogations revealed that the biological mother, identified as Miss Chioma, was given only ₦300,000 from the transaction.

The prime suspect and accomplice, a self-proclaimed prophetess named Precious Uchenna, retained the remaining ₦2.6 million after facilitating the sale alongside another individual.
While Uchenna claimed her actions were meant to assist the mother during difficult financial circumstances and family rejection, she could not justify withholding the vast majority of the funds.
SASA Managing Director, Monday Nwokoye, and Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Chinyere Onyekesi, strongly condemned the act, reiterating that private arrangements for child adoption or custody transfer are strictly illegal under state law.
Authorities confirmed that the baby was successfully traced, rescued unharmed, and placed under proper care as legal proceedings progress against the suspects.
