The family of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) of conducting a systematic campaign of harassment against his independent physicians.
In an urgent press statement released by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu family, the family announced a formal petition forwarded to the MDCN Registrar seeking immediate intervention.
The family alleged that state agency medical management previously allowed Kanu’s potassium levels to drop to a life-threatening 1.9 mmol/L while in custody, leaving him vulnerable to cardiac arrest.

According to the statement, Kanu’s health stabilized only after the intervention of independent doctor Emeritus Professor Dr. Martin Aghaji, whose team raised the patient's potassium levels to 2.9 mmol/L and halted symptoms such as severe nosebleeds, fainting, and foot swelling.
However, the family raised alarms that instead of being commended, Professor Aghaji was recently arrested by the DSS and member Dr. Charles Ndukwu was summoned before an MDCN Investigation Panel under claims of "unethical practices."
The Kanu family maintained that these actions represent a coordinated attempt to intimidate expert witnesses and compromise evidence, given that matters concerning the September 26, 2025 Abuja Federal High Court medical examination order remain sub judice before the Court of Appeal.
Demanding an immediate halt to all legal persecution, the withdrawal of MDCN summons, and an official explanation regarding the detention of Professor Aghaji, the family called for Kanu's complete transfer to the Nigerian Correctional Service to guarantee unrestricted access to independent medical care.
Copies of the petition have been officially transmitted to foreign governments including the United States, United Kingdom, and Israel, alongside global human rights organizations. The family urged Nigerian legal authorities to uphold the rule of law and protect medical professionals discharging their duty.
