Three firefighters sustained severe injuries late Thursday night while battling a massive fire at the AYM Shafa petrol station located in Area 3, Garki, Abuja.
The emergency responded at approximately 9:44 PM after a fuel tanker carrying roughly 45,000 liters of petrol exploded within the premises.
FCT Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Muhammad, confirmed that one firefighter is currently receiving intensive medical care at the National Hospital's Trauma Centre, while two others were taken to Alliance Hospital in Area 11 for emergency treatment.

The joint firefighting operation, personally supervised by Federal Fire Service Controller General Olumode Samuel and FCT Fire Service Director Adebayo Zacchaeus, prevented a wider catastrophe.
Preliminary damage assessments revealed that two civilian vehicles were completely destroyed, three fuel dispensers were engulfed, and sections of adjoining properties—including an office of the Federal Revenue Service (FRS) and Ahmad Plaza—sustained structural damage.
The FCT Fire Service has urged members of the public to avoid speculation as formal investigations into the root cause of the explosion remain underway. Station operators and commercial building managers have been reminded to strictly comply with statutory fire safety standards and ensure routine maintenance of all active fire protection systems.
