Operatives attached to the Nigeria Police Force’s Intelligence Response Unit and the Vicious Crime Response Unit (VCRU) have intercepted an active human trafficking operation in Onitsha, Anambra State, leading to the dramatic rescue of two young children and the arrest of a family-run trafficking syndicate.
The principal suspect, identified as Sunday Onome, was apprehended inside a local hotel alongside his girlfriend and biological son just moments before a scheduled child handover was set to take place.
Under intense interrogation by command detectives, Onome delivered a chilling confession, admitting that severe financial hardships following the sudden loss of his job as a private driver pushed him into contact with underground child harvesting cartels.
He confessed to participating in multiple highly lucrative operations across several states, pocketing a total of N3.6 million from two separate kidnapping assignments.
"The suspects admitted that he participated in multiple child trafficking operations, claiming he earned a total of N3.6 million from two assignments. He alleged that the first transaction involved the son of a close friend, whom he said he handed over to members of the syndicate for N1.3 million," police intelligence briefs revealed following the raid.
According to forensic field investigators, the network exploited informal trust relationships to target vulnerable minors. Onome's romantic partner allegedly managed the logistical communications, while his son assisted in physically transporting the abducted victims across state borders to designated distribution operatives.
The Police Command has reiterated that extensive tracking operations are still heavily underway to pinpoint the exact identities of the buyers and completely dismantle the wider institutional framework of the syndicate, while reminding the public that all suspects remain presumed innocent until a formal court verdict is delivered.
