In a recent appearance on Channels Television, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi launched a fresh critique against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, calling for the President to step down from office. Obi asserted that the current leadership lacks the capacity, vigour, and responsiveness needed to pull Nigeria out of its present socio-economic difficulties.
The Four-Year Tenure and Policy Velocity Debate
During the interview, the anchor raised concerns regarding Obi’s stance on governance timelines, pointing out that many policy and structural experts believe a four-year presidential term is insufficient to fully transform a nation. Analysts often argue that during a four-year tenure, a president’s first year is spent executing a inherited budget, the second year is spent attempting to navigate bureaucratic hurdles, the third year involves understanding executive machinery, and by the fourth year, the administration is already preparing for the next election cycle.
Responding directly to whether his four-year target was a realistic policy goal or merely an political strategy, Obi firmly dismissed the notion that governance requires years of orientation. He emphasized that strong leadership can alter the national trajectory within a few months if the right vision and discipline are applied.
According to Obi, six months is more than enough time to set Nigeria on a completely different course.
He stated that under President Tinubu’s leadership, the nation is currently heading in the wrong direction without a clear destination, making immediate intervention and decisive policy shifts necessary.
Questioning Capacity and Calling for a Peaceful Retirement
Addressing President Tinubu’s executive record, Obi highlighted what he views as a stark difference between Tinubu’s past performance and his current presidency. While supporters often reference Tinubu’s past tenure as Governor of Lagos State as proof of his executive capability, Obi argued that age, energy levels, and current national realities tell a different story.
Obi remarked that the political leader who governed Lagos decades ago is not the same person holding executive power in Abuja today. He described the President as "tired" and unable to cope with the rigorous demands of leading Africa’s most populous nation.
Because the administration consistently refuses to listen to constructive advice or adjust its economic and security strategies, Obi insisted that the most honorable course of action would be for President Tinubu to step aside and retire peacefully, allowing fresh leadership with the necessary capacity to drive the nation forward.
