The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected student cultists attached to the Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, following a violent clash that claimed the life of an undergraduate student.
The timely law enforcement breakthrough occurred during a swift security sweep launched in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
The victim of the initial attack was identified as 20-year-old Ebube Jonathan, a 200-level Management Science undergraduate at NDU. Security intelligence suggests Jonathan was cornered along Kabaka Street in the Amassoma community by a group of unidentified assailants.
He was brutally hacked with machetes and shot before being clinically confirmed dead. The police authorities noted that the deceased was a suspected operative of the Black Axe confraternity.
"The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists and recovered two locally made pistols with two live 9mm rounds of ammunition following a cult-related incident that claimed the life of a suspected cult member," stated Police Public Relations Officer DSP Musa Mohammed.
The prompt follow-up investigation conducted by officers of the Amassoma Division led to a direct raid at the Ending Pele hideout.
During the operation, security forces caught two university students allegedly preparing an armed retaliatory hit: Godswin Adobu (24), a 300-level Fine and Applied Arts student, and Tarilaefa Fesingha (21).
Operatives recovered two locally manufactured pistols, live rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a cache of illicit drugs from them. State Commissioner of Police Iyamah Daniel Edebor has re-echoed the command's strict zero-tolerance policy against campus cultism and gang violence.
