Asiya El-Rufai, the wife of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has raised an alarm over what she terms the dangerous "weaponisation" of the nation's healthcare system.
Speaking during an emotional interview on ARISE NEWS, the legal practitioner strongly condemned the recent arrest of her husband's longtime personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, warning that using medical professionals as collateral tools in political trials will severely damage the country's fragile health sector.
Professor Abubakar, who has managed El-Rufai's medical needs since his tenure at the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), was reportedly taken into custody by security operatives following a recent hospital consultation.
Asiya disclosed that her husband suffers from severe glaucoma and requires specialized clinical attention. She alleged that while anti-graft agencies like the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have allowed routine clinic visits, they are now deliberately blocking him from consulting his trusted specialist.
"The fact that we are weaponising healthcare—if doctors become afraid to offer opinions, what does it say?" Asiya El-Rufai lamented during the live broadcast.
"It’s not about Nasir El-Rufai anymore. It’s about the fact that professionals are being muzzled so that they are afraid to give professional opinions. This is one example of what will make somebody leave the country."
The former governor's wife also fiercely rubbished reports claiming the hospital visit was a clandestine front to hold strategic political meetings.
She clarified that the appointment complied fully with an explicit court directive granting El-Rufai unfettered access to healthcare.
She explained that because they requested a late 5:00 PM appointment to avoid public crowds, her husband was forced to wait in a public reception area for his medical reports, during which well-wishers naturally approached to greet him.
She insisted that interpreting these brief public interactions as unapproved political gatherings is an overly narrow and unfair enforcement of state power.
