The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced three men—Abdulrazak Umar (alias Abu Khalifa), Yunusa Musa, and Shamsu Adamu Sani—to life imprisonment for their involvement in the mass abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Presiding judge Justice Salim Ibrahim ordered the life sentences to take effect from the date of their initial arrest after the trio pleaded guilty to a 10-count terrorism charge bordering on conspiracy, aiding kidnapping, concealing information, and professing membership in the proscribed Darul Salam sect, an affiliate of Ansaru.
The court rejected defence pleas for leniency, siding with prosecution arguments that the defendants knowingly concealed critical information regarding the May 15, 2026, abduction of 39 pupils and six teachers who were subsequently held in forest hideouts until their rescue in July.

Reacting to the verdict, local traditional rulers including the Elesinele of Esinele, Oba Tajudeen Adeoye, expressed frustration, insisting that the convicts deserved the death penalty due to the loss of security personnel and vigilantes during the rescue efforts.
"They are supposed to be killed, not sentenced to life imprisonment... Before the abducted schoolchildren and their teachers were rescued, Army officers, members of Amotekun, Police officers, NSCDC members, vigilantes, and local hunters were killed by these heartless people."
