The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has firmly pushed back against the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, asserting that he will effectively be on the ballot during the highly anticipated 2027 presidential elections.
Umahi made the bold political declarations on Sunday afternoon while conducting an executive on-site inspection of a major federal highway construction project.
The verbal fireworks started after Peter Obi publicly rejected the Works Minister's invitation to participate in an open, televised debate focused on showcasing their respective governance track records as former state governors.
Obi had dismissed the challenge by claiming Umahi was constitutionally unqualified to debate him, advising the minister to first successfully secure an official presidential nomination from his party before demanding a platform confrontation.
Responding directly to the slight in a viral video clip, Umahi clarified the joint nature of the current administration's political future. “I’ve told him that I’m on the ballot. You know, when President Bola Tinubu is on the ballot, I’m on the ballot. Because I don’t want this project to stop.
I want it to be completed. So I want all of us together to win with President Bola Tinubu,” the minister maintained.
Umahi argued that the massive scale of ongoing nationwide road infrastructure development binds his political identity directly to the presidency, making him fully eligible to challenge any opposition leader on national development strategies.
