The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that the infamous era of ballot box snatching and manual manipulation of election results is gone for good.
The electoral umpire assured Nigerians that current technological safeguards are fully robust enough to insulate and protect every single ballot cast in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The historic declaration was made on Wednesday, July 1, in Abuja during a strategic courtesy visit to the INEC headquarters by the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.
Highlighting the critical electoral timeline, the INEC Chairman announced that the presidential election will take place on January 16, 2027, followed closely by the nationwide governorship polls on February 6, 2027.
While celebrating recent operational achievements in off-cycle elections—which saw over 90% early opening of polling units and swift data transfers via the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV)—officials warned that urban voter confusion and deep-rooted civic detachment remain dangerous threats.
"We must look the rural farmer, the marketplace woman, and the disillusioned urban youth in the eye and explain to them, in the language they understand, that because of the current technological infrastructure, the era of snatching ballot boxes or rewriting results manually is gone," the INEC Chairman stated emphatically.
Moving forward, INEC and the NOA are co-creating a decentralized, grassroots voter education campaign that aims to go far beyond simply telling citizens when to vote.
The commission called for immediate, aggressive joint campaigns to eliminate vote-buying and counter malicious disinformation campaigns, ensuring that NOA field officers are equipped with comprehensive technical knowledge to serve as trusted community ambassadors ahead of the 2027 ballot.
