The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is trending heavily across Nigeria following a surge of localized industrial actions, state-level shutdowns, and mounting friction between university lecturers and government authorities over persistent welfare failures.
The immediate catalyst for the trend is the Benue State University (BSU) branch of ASUU declaring a total, indefinite, and comprehensive strike action.
The lecturers downed tools following the failure of the state government and university administration to address a long list of grievances.
These include years of unpaid promotion arrears, unremitted pensions, the absence of a functional staff health insurance scheme, and the incomplete implementation of the Consequential Adjustment to Academic Salaries.

Concurrently, the broader conversation is being driven by the Lagos Zone of ASUU, which recently slammed the Federal Government for continuously shifting the crushing financial burden of running public universities onto underfunded institutions and underpaid lecturers.
