Academic activities were brought to a total standstill across all 33 Local Government Areas of Oyo State on Monday, June 1, 2026, as public primary and secondary educational institutions were completely shut down.
The mass closure followed an emergency directive issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for workers to embark on an aggressive solidarity strike.
The industrial action was organized to register deep public anger over the continued, agonizing captivity of dozens of pupils and teachers who were violently abducted from three learning centers in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area exactly 18 days ago on May 15, 2026.
