The National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, has pulled back the curtain on the internal administrative friction that triggered the primary election loss of prominent human rights activist Aisha Yesufu.
Speaking live on Channels Television’s popular flagship program Politics Today on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Enekweizu revealed that the party’s titular presidential torchbearer, Peter Obi, had explicitly preferred and advised that Yesufu contest for the AMAC/Gwari House of Representatives seat rather than the highly competitive Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate position.
According to the high-ranking party scribe, immediately after the former Anambra State Governor formally aligned forces with the NDC, executive discussions heavily focused on utilizing Obi’s sweeping political capital to build a seamless consensus among the 23 ambitious aspirants seeking various legislative tickets.
Enekweizu admitted his utter bewilderment when, merely days after Obi privately outlined the lower chamber strategic plan to him, Yesufu broke ranks by launching a massive social media campaign declaring her unwavering intention to run for the upper chamber of the National Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“He [Peter Obi] told me personally that he wanted Aisha Yesufu to run for the House of Representatives seat of AMAC/Gwari," NDC National Secretary Ikenna Enekweizu revealed.
"But two or three days after he said this to me, I was surprised to read on social media that Aisha is running for Senate... The national leader of the party invited Aisha Yesufu, met with her twice, appealing to her to run for the House of Representatives.
But Aisha said she was bigger than the reps office. She said she wanted to be a senator and nothing would stop her from going to the Senate. So we allowed her to run.”
Enekweizu clarified that Yesufu ultimately went on to lose the primary election fairly, firmly dismissing any lingering public allegations that the activist was subjected to biased or weaponized treatment by the party's national working committee.
He emphasized that the primary pool was heavily populated by twenty-three distinct, fiercely loyal supporters of Peter Obi who all purchased expression of interest forms.
The party scribe strongly advised Yesufu to emulate other mature, aggrieved contestants by utilizing the NDC's internal legal and dispute-resolution channels instead of venting operational frustrations on digital media, backing earlier declarations made by NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson.
