The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has identified approximately 385 security flashpoints and 200 logistically difficult terrains across the state ahead of the highly anticipated August 15, 2026, governorship election.
The details of this comprehensive risk assessment exercise have been formally processed and shared with the heads of all security agencies to guide tactical deployments and ensure a secure voting atmosphere.
Speaking on Friday at a high-level security meeting convened by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the South-West zone, Adegoke Fayoade, the Resident Electoral Commission (REC) for Osun State, Oluwatoyin Babalola, confirmed that the state is currently operating within its analytical "amber zone."
The meeting, which was held at the Osun State Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo and attended by State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan, focused on safeguarding the upcoming democratic process.
Babalola revealed that she has personally visited 29 out of the 30 local government areas, paying specific attention to Ila and Ifedayo local government areas, which have recorded recent cases of kidnapping.
"We identified 385 flashpoints in the state, which have been shared with the security agencies. We also identified difficult terrains to guide their operations, because there are still places in the state that are not motorable and cannot be easily accessed," REC Oluwatoyin Babalola disclosed.
Providing an operational update on logistics, Babalola announced that INEC has already received approximately 75 percent of the non-statutory and statutory materials required for the smooth conduct of the poll.
She appealed to the police and sister agencies to intensify their ground-truthing sweeps to reassure voters and eliminate fears of violence on election day.
The upcoming poll will see incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke seeking re-election under the Accord banner against main challengers Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Dr. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who enjoys the backing of former governor Rauf Aregbesola.
