The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has ordered a rigorous, highly coordinated enforcement campaign across all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), targeting vehicles operating with covered, obscured, altered, defaced, or completely unregistered number plates.
The tactical national exercise is structured to aggressively maximize public safety, optimize vehicle digital tracking, and stop criminal elements from leveraging untraceable automobiles to execute felonies and escape police detection.
In Rivers State, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, personally led field operations throughout Port Harcourt, monitoring critical choke points including the GRA Junction along Aba Road and Ikwerre Road.
Several high-profile violators were immediately apprehended and arraigned before an active mobile court situated at the Police Traffic Section, Mile 1 Divisional Police Headquarters.
CP Adepoju clarified that intelligence patterns firmly link obscured number plates to syndicates involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, and the transit of illegal arms.
He also noted that while tricycles and motorcycles face a strict 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. restriction due to "one-chance" robbery data, minibuses (popularly called Keke buses) are completely exempt from the curfew but will remain under close security monitoring.
“Vehicles operating without registration plates or with covered or obscured number plates will be impounded and their owners sanctioned accordingly," CP Olugbenga Adepoju warned, while strongly cautioning field officers against the extortion of motorists.
"Visible registration plates remain critical to crime detection, vehicle recovery and the identification of suspects involved in criminal activities and hit-and-run incidents.”
Simultaneously, the Kogi and Delta State Police Commands have activated parallel operations.
Kogi State PPRO, ASP Afusat Oyiza, announced that Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi has fully deployed Area Commanders and traffic personnel to impound violating vehicles for formal forensic investigation.
In Delta State, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, issued a statement on behalf of Commissioner Olufemi Oyeniyi, calling on motorists to immediately strip away any illegal frames, stickers, or privacy devices blocking plate visibility, warning that non-compliant transport operators will face immediate asset forfeiture and legal prosecution.
