The Anambra State Police Command has launched an aggressive security manhunt code-named "Operation Fish Them Out" following the brutal assassination of two police officers on Sunday night, May 31, 2026.
The fallen officers were gunned down during a sophisticated ambush pulled off by unknown gunmen along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Government Area.
The deadly assault targeted a moving security convoy that included Chief Ben Nwankwo, the Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who was returning to Awka from an official state function.
While Chief Nwankwo escaped the scene entirely unscathed, a fierce gun duel ensued, leaving several civilians within the entourage with various degrees of injuries.

During an emergency security meeting held at the Command Headquarters on Monday, June 1, the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed profound fury over the incident, vowing that the perpetrators will face absolute justice within 48 hours.
CP Orutugu warned motorists and commuters to exercise extreme caution when navigating the isolated Amansea–Ufuma stretch, labeling it a temporary haven for dangerous criminals. Furthermore, the police chief raised an alarm that criminal elements in the state are increasingly executing violent operations while disguised in counterfeit military and police uniforms.
This tragic incident comes on the heels of national mourning for 17 police personnel who paid the supreme price during a coordinated terrorist raid at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Yobe State, on May 8, 2026.
