Traditional Ruler Godwin Vonga Assassinated by Gunmen in Langtang South

The fragile peace in the middle belt was shattered on Sunday, May 31, 2026, when unknown heavily armed assailants ambushed and brutally murdered Godwin Vonga, a prominent traditional ruler in Plateau State.

The late monarch, who held the highly revered community title of Magaji Timshat, was cold-bloodedly assassinated along the desolate Timshat-Mabudi Road in Langtang South Local Government Area.

Local sources revealed that the tragic incident occurred while Vonga—a dedicated public servant and former councillor for Nasarawa Ward—was returning home after dropping his young children off at school in the neighboring town of Mabudi.

The sudden and violent passing of the traditional ruler has plunged Timshat and its surrounding rural communities into deep mourning, leaving residents in complete shock.

Reacting to the gruesome attack, the Executive Chairman of Langtang South Local Government Area, Hon. Nanfa Alhassan Nbin, issued a stern statement through his spokesperson, Butko Bako Iliya, describing the murder as barbaric, unfortunate, and completely unacceptable.

Sympathizing with the bereaved family, Hon. Nbin warned that criminal syndicates operating within the local government would face the full weight of the law, vowing that security operatives will work tirelessly to unmask and bring the perpetrators to justice.
