The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come under blistering public condemnation and intense human rights scrutiny following the controversial killing of 16-year-old Sesugh Atser in the Kanshio axis of Makurdi, Benue State.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, June 6, 2026, the anti-graft agency claimed that Sesugh was one of three internet fraud suspects who escaped from its Makurdi Zonal Directorate on May 4 by breaking through a toilet roof.
The commission further alleged that when operatives tracked him to a hideout on May 21, the teenager and allied cult members opened fire, leading to a shootout where Sesugh was fatally wounded in crossfire before being found by the roadside and transported to the Police Cottage Hospital.

However, this official narrative has been completely rejected by the public and the victim's family, sparking widespread allegations of an extrajudicial execution.
Prominent human rights activist Rinu Oduala and multiple citizens on social media platform X openly ridiculed the EFCC's story, questioning how a teenager could execute a prison break undetected and suddenly engage armed operatives in a gunfight.
In an exclusive interview, the boy's grieving mother, Jennifer Atser, revealed that Sesugh was a hardworking JSS 3 student and furniture-making apprentice who was already out on bail.
She stated that two plainclothes EFCC operatives lured her son to a local hotel, drew a weapon, chased him down, and shot him at close range. She added that as her son gasped for breath, he was calling out the name of the officer who shot him.
This tragic incident adds to a series of controversial EFCC operations across Akure, Uyo, and Benin City, drawing massive backlashes over warrantless raids, rights abuses, and institutional heavy-handedness.
