In a decisive bid to sanitize the state's healthcare sector, the Anambra State Ministry of Health has announced a comprehensive clampdown on all unregistered and illegally operating mortuary facilities across the state.
This regulatory directive was formalized via a public notice issued on Monday, June 1, 2026, by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Chukwulobelu Ugochukwu, acting on behalf of the state's Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike.
Under the new mandate, all private and public proprietors of morgues are required to immediately register their facilities or regularize their expired operational licenses in strict alignment with the provisions of the Public Health Law of Anambra State.

According to the Ministry, the rigorous exercise forms a core pillar of Governor Soludo's healthcare reform agenda, which seeks to tighten regulatory oversight, enforce ethical standards in mortuary practice, and curb unlawful activities such as the unauthorized handling or mutilation of corpses.
Additionally, establishing an accurate, centralized database is deemed critical for controlling the spread of infectious diseases during sudden biological outbreaks or pandemics.
The Ministry warned that immediate cross-state inspections and severe legal sanctions will be meted out to defaulters once the deadline lapses.
