The Abia State Police Command has successfully apprehended two middle-aged men for allegedly impersonating operational officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) within the Umuahia metropolis.
The suspects, identified as 41-year-old Anthony Kelechi and 42-year-old Bright Abraham, were arrested by detectives attached to the Central Police Station in Umuahia.
According to an official press statement released on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the security intervention was triggered by a disturbing video circulating across social media platforms which exposed the duo carrying out unauthorized law enforcement operations.
The viral footage depicted the two suspects—one outfitted in tactical gear resembling a community security operative and the other dressed in plain clothes—viciously assaulting and handcuffing an auto-rickshaw (keke) commercial driver.
Preliminary police investigations exposed that while the men were legitimate members of a registered non-governmental organization called the Social Watch Anti-Drugs Abuse Advocacy, they routinely abused their platform.
The suspects allegedly utilized the advocacy group as a fraudulent cover to masquerade as federal NDLEA agents, conducting unlawful citizen arrests, physical intimidation, and extorting large sums of cash from unsuspecting motorists.
Reacting to the incident, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, strongly cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands or using unauthorized force.
While noting that Section 20 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) legally permits private citizens to apprehend individuals caught committing a crime, he emphasized that any arrested suspect must be immediately surrendered to the nearest police station without delay or violence.
The command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extortion and civilian impersonation of armed service personnel, assuring residents that a discreet investigation is underway to ensure the diligent prosecution of both suspects.
