The financial burden on Nigerian households and micro-businesses is at the forefront of national economic discussions following the release of the official April 2026 Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The economic data began trending nationwide on Friday after revealing that the average retail price of petrol across the country surged to ₦1,532.93 per litre in April 2026.
This represents a sharp 18.97% month-on-month increase from the ₦1,288.54 recorded in March 2026, adding immense pressure to logistics, commuting, and overhead operations.

On a year-on-year layout, petrol prices shot up by 23.69% compared to April 2025.
A state-by-state analysis highlights that Yobe State recorded the highest average retail price at ₦1,599.05 per litre, with Edo and Bauchi close behind. Conversely, Niger State saw the lowest average price at ₦1,403.89.
In tandem, the NBS reported that the average cost of diesel spiked by 50.16% month-on-month to hit ₦2,474.69 per litre, driving up overall commercial manufacturing and transport indices.
