Nigeria’s political landscape has been set ablaze ahead of the 2027 general elections after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar clinched the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a highly contentious primary.
The ADC held a nationwide direct primary election utilizing the "Option A4" voting system, which required accredited party members across 8,809 wards to queue openly behind their chosen candidates.
The National Chairman of the party's primary committee, Senator David Mark, officially declared Atiku the winner after he secured a commanding 1,846,370 votes, heavily defeating former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who pulled 504,117 votes.
The political event is trending heavily across West Africa due to the immediate fallout from the ballot.
While Atiku has formally accepted the ADC flag and praised the process as "democracy at work," Rotimi Amaechi has fiercely rejected the results.

Calling the figures "concocted," Amaechi alleged widespread voter disenfranchisement and accused the ADC leadership of hijacking the process. The bitter split has thrown the multi-party opposition coalition into deep strain and reopened fierce national debates regarding regional zoning.
