A Federal High Court in Abuja has reviewed shocking video evidence in the ongoing trial of six men accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
During the court session on Monday, video recordings showed two defendants—retired Navy Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor and Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim—admitting they were aware of the plot masterminded by one Colonel M.A. Ma’aji.
While retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana denied knowledge of the coup, the video showed Inspector Ibrahim admitting to conducting reconnaissance at the Presidential Villa.
He confessed to receiving nearly ₦1.5 million and taking photographs of the President's residence to map out access routes. The Inspector revealed that coded terms like "fertilizer" and "farming" were used to refer to funding and the operation.
Retired Navy Captain Victor expressed deep remorse in the video, likening his failure to report the plot to being "at the wrong place at the wrong time."
He pleaded for clemency, noting that if the government could grant amnesty to terrorists, he should be forgiven for his lapse in judgment.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik overruled defense objections regarding the admissibility of the recordings, ordering a trial-within-trial to determine if the statements were made voluntarily.
According to Qubes Magazine, the investigators maintained that all sessions were recorded in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) to ensure transparency.
