As primary elections wrap up across major political platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections, the embattled Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has emerged as the most heavily hit political figure after completely losing control of the state's party apparatus.
Fubara, who famously defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking temporary political cover, completely withdrew from the governorship primary race.
This move followed the systemic disqualification of all his loyalists and associates by the APC screening committees, leaving the political structure entirely in the hands of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Reflecting on the development, Nyesom Wike clarified that Fubara's sudden exit was the result of a pre-existing political truce which stipulated that state impeachment filings against the governor would be dropped on the strict condition that he would not seek a second-term mandate.
Human rights activist Barrister Chief Idam lambasted the APC leadership, stating that while other incumbent APC governors like Uba Sani (Kaduna), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Dikko Radda (Katsina) received automatic return tickets, Fubara was isolated as a political scapegoat despite his vocal public declarations supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Political commentators warn that Fubara now risks fading entirely into obscurity, with heightened anxieties that state anti-graft machinery might be unleashed against his administration once his executive immunity expires.
However, former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Anthony Sani, remains optimistic, noting that historical shifts show regular figures can bounce back as power dynamics evolve.
