Osun Police Explain Gunshots on Baruwa Street Football Pitch During SCID Raid

The Osun State Police Command has issued an official public disclaimer completely denying viral social media allegations suggesting that its field operatives opened fire on innocent youths playing a weekend football match in the Ogo-Oluwa area of Osogbo.

The tension-soaked incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, drew heavy public criticism after terrified residents and local churchgoers abandoned their morning routines following sudden, rapid gunshots echoing across the neighborhood.

According to a clarifying statement released by the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) were executing a lawful arrest warrant linked to a high-priority petition submitted to the Office of the Inspector-General of Police on May 2, 2026.

The petition detailed a viral video showing active members of the notorious AYE Confraternity brandishing assault weapons and dangerous objects.

Utilizing precise actionable intelligence, detectives located and successfully apprehended one of the primary suspects identified in the footage, Semiu Baruwa, who is also accused of systematically vandalizing public advertising billboards across the state capital.

The police command explained that the law enforcement operation was violently disrupted when a volatile mob of suspected hoodlums, thugs, and local sympathizers actively blocked the exit routes, attempting to forcefully extract the suspect from police custody.

Faced with an immediate physical threat to their lives, the SCID operatives fired controlled warning shots into the air to safely disperse the advancing crowd and extricate themselves from the scene without recording casualties.

The command reemphasized that no law-abiding citizen was targeted, adding that the principal suspect remains in detention assisting with investigations, while active manhunts are ongoing to arrest the individuals responsible for obstructing executive police duties.
