Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) has thrown down a bold challenge to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, urging him to vacate his seat if he intends to enforce new rules barring newcomers from principal offices.
Oshiomhole’s fiery critique comes in response to a controversial proposed amendment to the Senate Standing Rules that would restrict leadership roles to long-term ranking members.
Oshiomhole pointed out the irony of the situation, noting that Akpabio himself became a minority leader in his first term during the 8th Senate.

“If we pass the rules that you must do eight consecutive years before you can be Senate President, it means he has to lead by example by vacating because he is presiding without the appropriate qualifications,” Oshiomhole told journalists.
He warned against attempts to "narrow future leadership" as if the National Assembly were a family inheritance.
According to Qubes Magazine, this internal friction highlights a growing divide within the ruling APC caucus in the Senate.
Oshiomhole's comments emphasize the democratic necessity of allowing competent lawmakers to lead, regardless of their tenure length.
