The Kwara State Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Bayo Fabiyi, alongside two of his close associates, has been violently abducted by heavily armed bandits in Oko-Irese, located within the Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The severe security incident unfolded on Sunday when Fabiyi, accompanied by a driver and an aide, embarked on a high-stakes humanitarian mission to deliver a substantial ransom package to secure the release of an earlier kidnapped community victim.
Local sources indicate that the delivery team was acting on precise operational directions from the criminal syndicate.
The ransom team reportedly journeyed into a dense forest zone along the volatile Kwara-Kogi state boundary, carrying a negotiated package consisting of approximately ₦30 million in cash, five operational motorcycles, and three bags of rice.
However, local intelligence sources reveal that the transaction took a tragic turn upon arrival, as the kidnappers ambushed and detained the ransom bearers instead of honoring the release agreement.
Compounding the tragedy, unverified reports now suggest that the original hostage had already been killed by the gang before Fabiyi's rescue team even commenced their journey.
The Kwara State Police Command, through Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo, stated on Monday that the command had yet to receive an official formal report from the victims’ families regarding the incident, but promised immediate investigation upon receipt of official notification.
Ironically, Fabiyi’s abduction occurs barely five weeks after he publicly raised alarms on May 16 regarding worsening rural insecurity in Kwara South, where he passionately advocated for formal security agencies to collaborate with local OPC operatives due to their intimate knowledge of complex forest routes and local geography.
