The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent advisory warning that 19 states, including Lagos, Delta, and Rivers, face an immediate risk of flash flooding.
The agency explained that dry, hardened soil from the previous season will likely cause heavy surface runoff during the expected early rains, preventing water from soaking into the ground.
States on high alert include Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo, Ondo, and Bayelsa.

NiMet warned that the flooding could lead to traffic disruptions, damage to farmlands, and the spread of water-borne diseases.
“Residents are advised to clear blocked drainages and avoid walking or driving through flooded areas,” the agency stated.
According to Qubes Magazine, this advisory follows a broader federal government alert that over 14,000 communities are at risk of severe flooding throughout 2026.
Authorities are urged to strengthen emergency response mechanisms to protect critical infrastructure.
