The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled Friday, May 8, 2026, to hear a lawsuit aimed at preventing former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
The suit, filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, argues that Jonathan is constitutionally ineligible to run for a third term as president.
Jideobi contends that because Jonathan completed the unexpired term of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and subsequently served a full term after winning the 2011 election, he has exhausted the constitutional limit of two tenures.

“If Jonathan contests and wins... he would be taking the presidential oath of office for the third time,” the plaintiff argued in his originating summons.
According to Qubes Magazine, Justice Peter Lifu ordered hearing notices to be served to Jonathan, INEC, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The outcome of this case is expected to set a critical precedent for Nigeria's constitutional order and the 2027 political landscape.
