Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully uncovered a massive illicit drug cache consisting of 498 kilograms of skunk cannabis hidden deep within a traditional community shrine in Edo State.
The major operational breakthrough, which occurred during a highly coordinated tactical raid on May 22, 2026, at the Igwe Community inside the Owan East Local Government Area, was formally made public by the Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Thursday.
According to command statements, anti-narcotics officers faced fierce initial resistance from local community youths who aggressively claimed that the chosen storage facility was the sacred home of indigenous deities and must not be desecrated.

Insisting on a comprehensive search, operatives breached the location to discover 59 commercial bags of skunk cannabis weighing 489 kilograms alongside an additional 9 kilograms of viable cannabis seeds.
Commander Ofoyeju disclosed that the large contraband haul belonged to a notorious regional drug baron identified simply as Asrenre, who managed to flee the scene prior to the outer perimeter breach.
In a related stabilization sweep within the same locality, tactical units intercepted 50-year-old Sunday Oghaimen in possession of 945 grams of cannabis and 19 grams of Tramadol, while a 33-year-old female suspect, Esther Igbafe, was apprehended with various quantities of cannabis, Tramadol, and Swinol pills.
A widespread regional manhunt has been officially activated to track down and dismantle all operational distribution links tied to the fleeing baron.
