The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed Lagos State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, Rivers, and six other states on a high-risk preparedness alert following a dynamic public health risk assessment.
The proactive health directive was triggered by a high probability of Nigeria importing the deadly Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease strain, following the World Health Organization's (WHO) recent declaration of the escalating outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda as a Public Emergency of International Concern.
The official advisory sent to health commissioners across all 36 states notes that while Nigeria has recorded zero confirmed cases, its high transit density, maritime ports, and porous land borders create extreme vulnerability.

The top ten highest-risk states—Lagos, FCT, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, and Adamawa—have been ordered to aggressively scale up diagnostic capabilities, contact tracing, and isolation infrastructures.
Highlighting a critical clinical challenge, the NCDC revealed that the Bundibugyo strain lacks an approved vaccine or targeted therapeutic treatment, as existing medical countermeasures like the Ervebo vaccine only protect against the Zaire Ebola strain.
Medical practitioners have been urged to maintain a high index of suspicion, as early symptoms closely mimic malaria and Lassa fever.
