Award-winning Nollywood actress and movie producer, Mercy Aigbe, has opened up about her early career struggles, recounting a tense encounter with an unnamed female producer who attempted to impose restrictive conditions before offering her film roles.
Speaking at an entertainment industry event, Aigbe shared the experience to highlight the high-handed treatment actors frequently navigate behind the scenes.
The actress, who recently celebrated her milestone 20th anniversary in the Nigerian film industry, revealed that the producer aggressively questioned her acting credentials and expressed annoyance that Aigbe was already filming another movie project in Ibadan without her express clearance.

According to an entertainment industry retrospective, the senior filmmaker went as far as comparing her unfavorably to other established industry names.
“The woman was like, ‘Who is Mercy? I don’t have time. Better introduce yourself properly, or else I will cut the phone,'" Aigbe recounted. "She said the only Mercy she knows is Mercy Johnson and asked why I was calling her. I told her that her production manager had called about a job, but there was no follow-up."
Aigbe explained that when she informed the producer about her active location schedule in Oyo State, the filmmaker took offense.
"She asked me where I was, and I told her I was on set in Ibadan filming another movie, and she asked which permission I took to be filming another movie,” Aigbe added.
Despite the initial roadblocks and gatekeeping from certain industry stakeholders, Aigbe noted that she remained resilient, constantly evolving her craft over two decades to become one of the most influential actresses and independent film producers in modern cinema.
