Akwete Tragedy: Man Arrested For Involuntary Manslaughter Following Altercation With Sister

Abia State Police Command Headquarters administrative block in Umuahia

The Abia State Police Command has officially arrested a resident identified as Mr. Chidi Stanley following a domestic altercation in Obiohuru, Akwete, which resulted in the death of his eight-year-old daughter, Miss Chiamaka Stanley.

According to an official press release issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the suspect was taken into custody following a fatal incident on May 11, 2026.

The command used the opportunity to categorically dismiss a viral video circulating on social media platforms that falsely accused officers from the Akwete Divisional Police Headquarters of professional misconduct and the reckless use of firearms.

The police spokesperson explained that the suspect became embroiled in a heated domestic dispute with his biological sister, Mrs. Chinyere Stanley.

During the fight, the suspect picked up a stone and threw it at his sister. The projectile missed its intended target and struck his young daughter.

Although the child was rushed to a nearby medical facility, she was confirmed dead upon arrival by the attending medical doctor.

Rather than reporting the matter, the family concealed the incident and began making secret arrangements for a swift burial.

Acting on actionable intelligence, police operatives arrived at the scene to inspect the body and invite the family for questioning, but they were met with violent resistance from some local youth. DSP Chinaka explained the escalation, stating:

"The family, supported by some youths of the community, resisted police intervention and denied access, creating a tense and potentially violent situation.

The officers documented the scene, including the already-dug grave, and withdrew to prevent escalation.

Subsequently, the Division issued an official invitation to the family and engaged community leaders, which led to compliance.

Following preliminary investigations, the case, along with the suspect, was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department."

Following the transfer of the suspect to the SCID, agitated youths attempted to attack the Akwete police facility, forcing officers to defend themselves and protect public property.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, has reiterated the command's commitment to civility and absolute professionalism, warning residents against shielding criminal suspects or assaulting law enforcement officers executing their constitutional duties.
