The Imo State Police Command has confirmed that the boyfriend of murdered 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Achumba, remains in strict police custody as comprehensive forensic examinations intensify.
The deceased, a post-basic midwifery student at Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School (also known as Mercy College of Nursing Science) located in Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, was discovered dead inside her off-campus residence at Umuadara last Thursday.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, investigators have sent recovered physical evidence to the laboratory for fingerprints and biological analysis.
Sources reveal that the victim's boyfriend was ironically the individual who initially reported the grim discovery to the police, but he was detained during the preliminary stages of the homicide investigation.

His continued detention is tied to major contradictions in the case files; one of the primary suspects, 32-year-old Onyema Okonkwo, initially confessed to repeatedly raping and killing Achumba alongside a 25-year-old accomplice, Emmanuel Onyekachi, because she recognized them.
However, upon arrival at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) headquarters in Owerri, Okonkwo suddenly recanted his statement, claiming he acted entirely alone and vindicating Onyekachi.
DSP Okoye stated that any individual proven innocent through conclusive lab results will be promptly discharged.
