The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially demanded a thorough investigation and comprehensive autopsy reports following the violent killing of two Nigerians in South Africa.
The call for justice was made on Monday during a high-level meeting between Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Lesoli Machele.
According to a statement by the Ministry's spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government is closely monitoring the situation through its mission in South Africa.
“The killings have heightened tension within the Nigerian community in South Africa, prompting the Nigerian government to demand full autopsy reports on the deceased as well as access to relevant case files,” Ebienfa stated.
While South African authorities have condemned the violence and promised prosecution, no arrests have been made as of yet.
Beyond the investigation, the Federal Government has urged Pretoria to expedite the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on early warning mechanisms to prevent future xenophobic-related violence.
Amidst the rising tension, at least 130 Nigerians have expressed interest in being repatriated.
While the process is currently self-funded, the Ministry indicated that the Federal Government might intervene for those unable to afford travel costs.
