Family members of the former Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, staged a peaceful protest outside the national headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja on Monday, accusing the secret police of flagrantly violating active court orders regarding his custodial detention.
The public demonstration follows a high-stakes legal tug-of-war involving the DSS, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Federal High Court.
Speaking passionately on behalf of the family, the former governor's second wife, Asia El-Rufai, disclosed that the family is currently enduring severe psychological distress, surveillance, and persistent phone tapping.
She revealed that prior to the court's afternoon adjournment, two separate judicial orders from a Kaduna High Court explicitly directed that El-Rufai remain in the custody of the ICPC.

According to the family, DSS operatives bypassed those directives during a brief court stand-down period, attempting to forcefully relocate the former governor to their facility.
Recounting her husband's physical resistance to the unauthorized transfer, Asia stated:
“He said to them, ‘I am not going to step down because there are two court orders that the Kaduna court gave that I should be remanded in ICPC. Why are you bringing me here? He said, I am not furniture to be moved.’ He told them that if you want to take me inside DSS custody, you will have to physically force me into doing this, because you had an agreement. Justice Joyce AbdulMalik had said let DSS and ICPC go and decide who will keep him, and you people decided they are keeping him with ICPC. What has changed?”
The family further alleged that El-Rufai, who has now marked 91 days in continuous detention, is being systematically denied access to his private physicians despite explicit court permissions.
While an ICPC in-house medical doctor recently recommended advanced diagnostic testing, the family claims the management of the anti-graft agency subsequently blocked his personal doctors from reviewing the clinical results.
Adding a legislative voice to the grievance, the former governor’s son and member of the House of Representatives, Honorable Bello El-Rufai, heavily criticized the ₦100 million bail terms imposed by Justice Joyce AbdulMalik.
He argued that the prerequisites—which mandate a Grade Level 17 federal civil servant who owns a titled property in Asokoro or Maitama, alongside a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council—were deliberately designed to keep his father indefinitely behind bars.
Rep Bello labeled the trial politically motivated and announced intentions to submit a formal petition before the floor of the National Assembly.
