An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced a 33-year-old church usher, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, to death by hanging or lethal injection after finding him guilty of the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga.
The presiding judge, Justice Ekpo Ntekim, delivered the final verdict on Friday following a two-count charge of murder and stealing brought against the convict.
The prosecution proved that the tragic incident occurred at around 7:00 am on February 6, 2026—which happened to be Nelson's birthday.
The convict left his residence along Udo Udoma Avenue and visited the deceased at her apartment on Aka Road under the guise of using her Android smartphone to post his birthday pictures on social media platforms.

A violent struggle ensued when Nelson attempted to forcefully seize the mobile device.
The convict slammed Effanga's head against the wall before strangling her to death.
In a calculated move to conceal the crime, Nelson carefully arranged the victim's corpse on her bed to make it look like she was asleep, pocketed the stolen phone, and fled the scene.
The convict's evasion of justice was short-lived.
Utilizing digital tracking systems, security operatives closed in on Nelson at approximately 2:00 am on February 8, 2026, while he was actively attending a late-night program at his church along Nsikak Eduok Avenue.
Upon interrogation, he signs a full confession detailing the crime.
Justice Ntekim ruled that the punishment for stealing was legally subsumed under the capital sentence for murder, bringing a definitive end to the judicial process.
