Celebrity medical expert and prominent digital health influencer, Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known across social media platforms as Aproko Doctor, has released a critical health advisory strongly warning Nigerians against the common practice of purchasing and consuming spoiled, rotten tomatoes.
The public alert, which was shared via a detailed health broadcast on his official X handle on Monday, May 25, 2026, targets the hazardous consumption of degraded tomatoes locally designated in open marketplaces as Ata Esha or Awarawa.
Dr. Egemba revealed that the visible white patches and mold filaments frequently observed on these decaying fruits are caused by invasive fungal strains that systematically synthesize highly dangerous poisons known as aflatoxins.

Medical research conclusively links chronic exposure to aflatoxins with severe liver tissue damage and liver cancer in adult populations, as well as significant developmental delays and stunted growth when introduced into the fragile systems of growing children.
Aproko Doctor pointed out that because of biting economic pressures, many consumers compromise safety for affordability by intentionally picking cheaper, damaged stock.
He strictly cautioned that merely slicing or washing away the visibly rotten sections does not make the remaining part safe for consumption, as invisible fungal root structures and micro-toxins routinely permeate the entire food item.
