In a significant sign of warming relations, the first direct commercial flight between the United States and Venezuela in seven years landed in Caracas on Thursday.
The American Airlines flight (Envoy Air 3599) departed Miami, carrying senior Washington officials and civilian passengers.
The resumption of travel follows a major political shift in Venezuela and the easing of sanctions by the Trump administration. Previously, travelers faced eight-hour layovers in third-party hubs; the direct route now takes less than three hours.
While initial tickets are priced at $3,000, costs are expected to drop as a second daily flight is scheduled for May 21. The flight even featured a traditional menu of cachapas to mark the occasion.
