Meta Announces 'WhatsApp Plus': A New Era of Personalization and Paid Subscriptions
In a major shift for the world’s most popular messaging app, Meta has officially confirmed plans to launch WhatsApp Plus, an optional paid subscription service.
The move, which mirrors Telegram’s "Premium" model, aims to offer power users more control over their messaging experience without disrupting the core free service.
According to a statement from Meta, the subscription is currently in a small-scale testing phase. WhatsApp Plus is expected to debut with a launch package that includes:
Enhanced Organization: Expanded pinned chats and custom chat lists.
Visual Personalization: New chat themes and unique bubble colors.
Exclusive Content: Interactive message reactions and unique stickers.
While WhatsApp briefly charged a small access fee in its early years, this marks the first time Meta is targeting monetization through advanced features.
The company noted that the core messaging experience will remain free, supported by the broader Meta ecosystem and potential non-intrusive ads in the Status section.
Industry observers suggest this is Meta’s direct response to Telegram, which has long led the market in app customization.
