Withdraw Passports from Former Citizens Immediately – Tunji-Ojo Directs Immigration

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo directing Nigeria Immigration on passport withdrawal

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has issued a strict directive to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to withdraw and deactivate the passports of individuals who have renounced their Nigerian citizenship.

This move aims to protect the integrity of the nation's sovereign documents and prevent identity fraud.

In a statement released on Friday by his media aide, Alao Babatunde, the Minister clarified that this order specifically targets individuals whose renunciation requests have been formally approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Under Section 29 of the 1999 Constitution, once a renunciation is registered by the President, the individual officially ceases to be a Nigerian citizen.

"Once a person ceases to be a citizen of Nigeria, he can no longer carry any sovereign document of Nigeria, including the Nation’s passport," the Minister maintained.

This policy is part of a broader wave of passport and visa reforms aimed at securing Nigeria’s borders and ensuring that only eligible persons possess the national travel document.
