Tragedy struck the Ariko community in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Easter Sunday, as terrorists launched a coordinated assault on two Christian worship centers.
The attack, which targeted the First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church, has left at least seven people dead and scores of others abducted.
Mark Bawa, the councillor representing Awon Ward, confirmed the horrific incident to Punch Online, stating that the attackers arrived in large numbers during the early morning services.
The gunmen reportedly surrounded the churches and opened fire sporadically, causing a stampede as worshippers fled for their lives.
“The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the area and began shooting at worshippers. Several people were killed, and many others were taken away into the bush,” Bawa reported.
Residents lamented that the lack of telecommunications coverage in the rural district hindered a swift response from security forces.
This marks the second major assault in the area in two months, following a mass abduction in nearby Kurmin Wali in February 2026.
The Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, has acknowledged the reports and stated that the command is working to provide further details and track the perpetrators.
The incident has cast a shadow over Easter celebrations in Southern Kaduna, reigniting fears over the vulnerability of rural religious gatherings.
