The Delta State Government has successfully evacuated 34 of its indigenes studying at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) following a spike in regional instability and the subsequent shutdown of academic activities.
The rescue operation, personally approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, was launched as a proactive measure to ensure the safety of students caught in the crossfire of the ongoing security crisis in Plateau State.
The students were received in Delta by the State Director of Protocol, Chief Sunday Onoriode, and the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Comrade Ezekiel Okoh.
Officials noted that the mission was executed under difficult circumstances, navigating strict curfew restrictions and high-tension zones to reach the stranded students.
"The intervention was necessary to ensure their safety. We prioritized their immediate return through coordinated efforts with transport operators and security stakeholders," Chief Onoriode stated.
One of the evacuated students, Newton Miracle, described the situation in Jos as increasingly volatile and thanked the state government for its timely intervention.
The Delta government has assured the students of continued support as they await the official reopening of the university and a return to peace in the Middle Belt.
